# Baroque Bows — Basil de Visser

> Maker of classical, baroque and early romantic bows for violin, viola,
> cello, viola da gamba and double bass. Historically informed bows,
> modelled on original examples. Making bows since 1988; the workshop is
> in Rome.

Every bow is modelled on historical originals. Where possible those originals
are studied in the hands of the musicians who own them, so that their playing
characteristics can be judged directly; museum instruments are measured and
photographed, and in rare cases — such as the Marais gamba bow — a painting
serves as the source because no original survives. Classical and early
romantic bows follow German and Tourte models; baroque bows follow
authenticated historical examples.

All bows can be custom-made to a player's specifications, including
adaptations for modern instruments, and an exact replica of an existing
historical bow can be made on request. Alongside new bows the workshop offers
restoration and repair of bows both modern and historical, recambering to
restore optimal curvature, and a rehair service ready for collection the next
day. Visits are by appointment.
